This beautifully crafted ceremonial walking stick tells the story of Nyami Nyami the river GOD of the Tonga Tribe who inhabit the Zambezi Valley.
The Tonga people were simple folk who lived in peaceful seclusion along the banks of the great Zambezi river in the Zambezi valley. They had little contact with the outside world and believed their God Nyami Nyami supplied them with water and food.
Their idealistic lifestyle changed when a hydro-electric scheme was proposed to supply power to Zambia and Zimbabwe.
In 1956 construction of the Kariba Dam wall was started and according to the Tonga tribe, Nyami Nyami and his wife were separated by the Dam wall.
The unprecedented floods away, followed resulted in the dam wall foundations being washed away and 29 lives being lost. This act was attributed by the Tonga people to the wrath of Nyami Nyami.
After the completion of the Dam wall the Tonga believe Nyami Nyami withdrew from the world of men.
